Shaughnessy STEM: An Advocacy Position, Not a Content Area
More and more these days, in educational meetings, conferences, and policy arenas, the talk is that “it’s all about STEM.” STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and it has rapidly become a driving force in educational policy and funding decisions in the United States. I find both strengths and problems with the current STEM discussions across our professional communities. January 2012 Problem to Ponder
PTP_HPUnder Lock and Key 
NCTM President Mike Shaughnessy presents another Problem to Ponder to give you and your students an opportunity to engage in reasoning and sense making in the classroom. He also gives readers his “ponderings” about solutions to the math problems that appeared in December and November. The president’s thoughts and solution to the new task will appear in mid-February, along with another interesting math task. Read more for ponderings and solutions...

New Title in NCTM’s Focus in High School Mathematics Series
14287Focus in High School Mathematics: Technology to Support Reasoning and Sense Making is the latest addition to NCTM’s landmark Focus in High School Mathematics series. The authors’ primary interest is the potential of technology to leverage or enhance opportunities for students to engage in mathematical sense making and reasoning. Technology is an integral part of society and used extensively in most mathematics-related fields. As a result, the book focuses on technology and shows its importance in supporting reasoning and sense making.  Learn more.

Shaughnessy_52010Research: The Critical Link to Informing Practice and the Public—the Time Is Now! 
When the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were released in 2010, a joint task force representing NCTM, the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM), the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics (ASSM), and the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) was appointed to make recommendations to assist our respective members with the task of implementing and assessing the new standards. You won’t want to miss this special event in which Ravitch will discuss the impact of No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top on the nation's schools and will review research findings on such initiatives as merit pay and teacher evaluation. Ravitch is research professor of education at New York University and a distinguished historian of American education and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C.
