Max Sobel made a lifelong career out of inspiring others in the art of teaching. He began his own teaching career in 1947, and continued to teach after his retirement at Montclair State University, where he became professor emeritus.
During the course of his 50-year career, Sobel served NCTM as president from 1980 to 1982 and as a member of the Board of Directors. He contributed to the work of numerous other mathematics organizations, including the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New Jersey (as president), the Mathematical Association of America (as chair of the New Jersey section), the National Science Foundation, and the Educational Testing Service.
Sobel also authored more than 60 books.
Max A. Sobel died on November 11, 2016, at the age of 92.
