Taking Action to Implement Ambitious Teaching
Teachers in grade 6 through 8 will take part in a book study of Taking Action: Implementing Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices for grades 6 - 8. As ideas are learned and discussed, they will walk through the instructional process described in the book in planning for instruction with students. This will include establishing goals for learning and identifying tasks that will engage students in problem solving in order to meet the goal. As a result, teachers will focus on building conceptual understanding as a stepping stone to procedural fluency while posing purposeful questions and using representations to support learning. Meaningful discourse will be an integral part of pulling all of these pieces together to make connections explicit. This will build upon the work the department has been doing this year to support students' engagement in productive struggle.
