I am mathematics teacher at Saint John Paul II Catholic Academy in Boston. The Academy has an enrollment of more than 1,250 students at four campuses in the inner-city neighborhoods of Dorchester and Mattapan in Boston. That makes the Academy the largest Pre-K to 8th grade school, public or private, in the state. This proposal seeks a grant from NCTM's Improving Students' Understanding of Geometry. If this request is approved, I will use the grant funding to develop and implement a series of hands-on projects in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth grade classes that I teach. I will also train my colleagues in the math department to implement the projects in their own classes. I teach more than 60 students in the middle school grades and, as a group, my colleagues and I teach math to more than 300 students.
