Visualizing Mathematics Through Desmos Technology
Research tells us that in order for our math brain to grow, we (teachers and students) need to make visual connections to math. Yet, most of our department learned our math and got our teaching credentials years ago, when the only technology available was a scientific calculator and when the emphasis was on math as a performance subject, as opposed to a learning subject. We realize that we need to up-date our technology skills and shift our thinking so that, as a department, we can start teaching math as an open set of ideas that can be played with and explored. An NCTM In-Service Training Grant would provide our department with funds to hire a Desmos PD Trainer and release time to collaborate around meaningful ways to integrate technology into our classrooms, making math visual for all students.
