Kloosterman and Burkhardt begin this chapter with discussion of the role of assessment in education and then move to current trends and practices in large-scale and classroom assessment of students.  Topics discussed include performance assessment, computer-based assessment systems, and assessment of performance on the Common Core State Standards.  Examples of performance assessment items are provided along with commentary on the relationship between assessment and achievement.  Trends in assessment of teachers are also examined.
