"Why Should I?" Insight Into the Choices Students Make Regarding Mathematics Engagement

Too often in their mathematical experiences, students are asked to take mathematics on faith. "Learn it so that you can do better in the next class," or "to go to College," or "to gain more earning power," are often projected so far into the future that continued struggle in the here and now may not seem worth it to many. Students' interest, and their beliefs about the utility of mathematics have both short-term and long-term manifestations. This webinar examines the relationship between the here-and-now, and students' future mathematical lives, and explores what can be done so that their decisions to engage can become more productive, and perhaps even enjoyable.
