Infusing History into Mathematics Instruction

History naturally provides us with ways of teaching, as the parallels that exist between the historical development of a concept and the way students learn those concepts offer valuable insights into how we should approach a concept with our students. The purpose of this research project is to develop and implement a history-infused mathematics curriculum through teacher-researcher collaboration. We employ multi-tier design-based research (Cobb, Confrey, Lehrer, & Schauble, 2003) to build effective relationships among the researcher, teacher, and students. We will develop a set of history-infused lessons through the teacher-researcher collaboration, and explore the effect of the history-infused lessons in supporting students' conceptual understanding, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
