JRME Monograph 17: Making Visible the Invisible: The Promise and Challenges of Identity Research in Mathematics Education provides new ways of thinking about and doing research on identity in mathematics education that will enhance future research in this area. In the two decades since the mathematics education community began to take up issues of identity, it has become a critically important, well-recognized topic in the field. As such, this monograph marks an important time to take stock of how far the field has come and look forward to where research might still go, particularly in terms of how research on identity can continue to attenuate inequity for minoritized students.

This monograph takes stock of how far the field of mathematics education has come in understanding how young people develop identities as learners and doers of mathematics, and it offers guidance on how research might move forward by interrogating whom or what we study and when, where, and why we go about such inquiry. Paying particular attention to the impact on minoritized children, each chapter of the monograph engages different theoretical and methodological aspects of how knowledge in this area is produced, and each closes with commentaries by scholars who helped build this literature.
