Chapter 22: Learning to Learn Mathematics: Voices of Doctoral Students in Mathematics Education. In this article, Dan Chazan, Sarah Sword, Eden Badertscher, Michael Conklin, Christy Graybeal, Paul Hutchison, Anne Marie Marshall, and Toni Smith (all of University of Maryland – College Park) share an experience of teaching and learning at the doctoral level. Two instructors, one with a Ph.D. in mathematics and one with an Ed.D. in mathematics education, strove to create an environment in which doctoral students in mathematics education could develop their own mathematical questions and explore them. This particular course was one part of a larger effort in the Mid-Atlantic Center for Mathematics Teaching and Learning to reenvision doctoral education. The authors describe the structure of the course in conjunction with the reflections of the learners. Their goal is to portray images of what mathematical exploration can look like and how it can feel to educators who participate in such an experience.
