    NCTM Board of Directors Meeting Summary October 2019

    At its meeting at NCTM Headquarters in Reston, Virginia on October 11-12, 2019 the Board of Directors:

    • Received an interim report and financial update from the Budget and Finance Committee.
    • Reviewed strategic planning work from July and discussed updates from Board members and staff on strategic initiatives, including curated custom collections of NCTM content, social media initiatives, publications marketing, extended conference learning, member benefits, and the development of online special interest groups.
    • Passed a motion to develop and offer an NCTM virtual conference to be developed through the Professional Development Services Committee to be offered in 2020.
    • Discussed the new Catalyzing Change books for Early Childhood and Elementary Mathematics and Middle School Mathematics, which will be published and released in April 2020.
    • Discussed outreach and the development of related materials for the two new Catalyzing Change titles.
    • Approved the forthcoming Catalyzing Change in Early Childhood and Elementary Mathematics: Initiating Critical Conversations and Catalyzing Change in Middle School Mathematics: Initiating Critical Conversations as official positions of the Council.
    • Adopted a policy for gender-neutral language in NCTM publications as recommended by the Publishing Committee.
    • Received updates on the NCTM Centennial Annual Meeting and Research Symposium.
    • Discussed and addressed recommendations made at the 2019 Delegate Assembly.
    • Approved the inclusion of a land acknowledgment statement in the opening sessions of future NCTM annual and regional conferences.
    • Received a report from outside real estate legal counsel on the status of the pending sale of NCTM headquarters and the common property of the Center for Educational Associations.
    • Reviewed interim reports from the president, president-elect, and executive director.

    The NCTM Board of Directors met on July 11-12, 2019 in Reston, Virginia. The following is a summary of actions and agenda items from the meeting.

    Reports, Updates, and Discussions

    At its July meeting, the Board:

    • Reviewed FY 2019 yearend budget results.
    • Discussed drafts of two new Catalyzing Change books—one for elementary and early childhood, and one for middle school—scheduled to be published in time for the Centennial Annual Meeting in April 2020.
    • Received an update on the development of the new journal Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching Mathematics PK-12 (MTLT), which will publish its inaugural issue in January 2020.
    • Discussed and considered various scenarios and models for developing an NCTM virtual conference.
    • Engaged in facilitated strategic planning that included reaffirming the existing Mission Statement and Strategic Framework.
    • Engaged in strategic planning that focused on increasing the value of NCTM membership and strengthening and capitalizing on connections between existing programs and products related to membership—the new journal, Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching Mathematics PK-12 (MTLT), the Annual Meeting, NCTM publications, and professional services.
    • Discussed repackaging video content from the NCTM Annual Meeting & Exposition.
    • Discussed ways to enrich E-Tables of Contents from NCTM journals that are sent to members.
    • Discussed ways to increase the NCTM presence on social media.
    • Discussed possible future projects to collaborate with the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
    • Discussed the selection of future locations of the Annual Meeting and NCTM regional conferences.
    • Discussed NCTM’s engagement with EdReports and ways to collaborate with and influence future EdReports work.
    • Approved interim committee appointments to existing committees.

    The NCTM Board of Directors met on April 1, 2019 in San Diego, California. The following is a summary of actions and agenda items from the meeting.

    Reports, Updates, and Discussions

    At its April meeting, the Board:

    • Reviewed FY 2019 operating budget projections.
    • Discussed the status and development of two new Catalyzing Change books—one for elementary and one for middle school—scheduled to be published in time for the Centennial Annual Meeting in 2020.
    • Discussed the influence Catalyzing Change in High School Mathematics is having on state-level decisions.
    • Discussed producing a published Proceedings in the future for the NCTM Research Conference.

    Board Actions

    • Elected the Executive Committee for 2019-2020.
    • Approved a policy change for lead speaker registration fees for NCTM regional conferences.
    • Approved changing the name of the annual summer Affiliate Leaders Conference to NCTM Leadership Conference.
    • Approved new appointments to NCTM committees and program committees for the 2020 NCTM Annual Meeting in St. Louis and NCTM regional conferences in 2020 and 2021.
    • Approved an allocation to acquire proposal submission and conference program software for the NCTM Research Conference.
    • Dissolved the editorial panels for Teaching Children Mathematics, Mathematics Teaching in Middle School, and Mathematics Teacher as part of the transition to the new consolidated journal Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching Mathematics PK-12.

    The NCTM Board of Directors met on February 22–23, 2019 in Reston, Virginia. The following is a summary of actions and agenda items from the meeting.

    Board Actions

    At its February meeting, the Board:

    • Reviewed and approved the FY 2020 operating budget.
    • Approved a proposal to develop two new books for elementary and middle grades extending the messages of Catalyzing Change in High School Mathematics.
    • Recommended that the Professional Development Services Committee (PDSC) consider a preliminary proposal presented to the Board about monetizing conferences that would include developing NCTM virtual conferences. The Board will consider PDSC’s recommendation at a future meeting.
    • Approved two new NCTM Affiliates: the Bermuda Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Mathematics Student Leadership Team at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
    • Approved the addition of 8 pages to each issue of the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education (JRME) for the 2020 volume year, the 50th anniversary of JRME.
    • Approved adding three members to the panel of the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education (JRME).
    • Approved a motion to post email addresses and Twitter handles of Board members on the NCTM website.
    • Approved new appointments to NCTM committees.
    • Approved the 2019 NCTM Legislative Platform.

    Reports, Updates, and Discussions

    • Reviewed and commented on design of the new consolidated journal Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PreK-12, which will launch in January 2020.
    • Reviewed NCTM professional services and revenue and approved an expansion of NCTM’s current professional services offerings.
    • Reviewed the transition of institutional membership to group access memberships.
    • Considered a response to a motion from the Membership and Affiliate Relations Committee to respond to a resolution from the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New Jersey to address issues related to acceleration.
    • Discussed new initiatives for generating revenue.
    • Reviewed and discussed a social media strategy for Board members.
    • Reviewed the current agreement with the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) to produce and publish Mathematics Teacher Educator (MTE).

    The NCTM Board of Directors met on October 12–13, 2018 in Reston, Virginia. The following is a summary of actions and agenda items from the meeting.

    • The Budget and Finance Committee presented a financial update and reported that the gap between expenses and revenues had been reduced significantly over the past two years.

    Board Actions

    At its October meeting, the Board:

    • Created a Conference Advisory Group of the Board to review conference data and to advise and work with staff to determine the number of future NCTM conferences and their locations and dates.
    • Approved a Board communications plan to share a summary of Board meetings on the Board page of NCTM.org and on MyNCTM after Board meetings.  In the future, major agenda topics will be shared in advance of Board meetings.
    • Formed a committee of the Board to develop a social media strategy for the NCTM Board.
    • Formed a committee of the Board to develop a book study guide for Catalyzing Change in High School Mathematics: Initiating Critical Conversations.
    • Reviewed and discussed nominations and elections procedures.
    • Approved two appointments to the Mathematics Teacher Educator editorial panel.

    Reports and Updates

    • NCTM membership is up 4.3 percent compared to the same time last year.
    • One year after the launch of MyNCTM, engagement and activity are exceeding projected benchmarks.
    • NCTM professional services staff provided an update on offerings of contracted professional development for schools and districts.
    • Advocacy and communications staff and consultants presented an update on Capitol Hill and legislative activities and the integration of Catalyzing Change communications with NCTM advocacy.
    • The President and staff offered an update and report from the first meeting of the 2020 NCTM Centennial Annual Meeting Program Committee.
    • Publishing Committee liaisons provided an update and progress report on the development of Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PreK-12.
