Johnny Lott began his term as president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics at the end of the NCTM Las Vegas Annual Meeting in April 2002. Lott was project manager for the Figure This! program and editor for the high school books of NCTM’s Navigations series. He has served on numerous committees in NCTM and its Affiliates, and he has chaired the editorial panels for the Arithmetic Teacher, Student Math Notes, and Mathematics Education Dialogues. In the mathematics education community, he was codirector of the Montana Algebra and the Systemic Initiative for Montana Mathematics and Science projects.
He has received Distinguished Alumnus awards from Union University, Tennessee, and Georgia State University.
